Triple top
bearish · reversal pattern
A triple-top forms when price tests the same resistance three times in succession without breaking through. It is functionally a stretched double-top — confirmation on close below the trough connecting the three peaks.
Formation rules
- Three peaks at approximately the same level
- Volume declines on each successive peak
- Confirmation: close below the connecting trough
How to trade it
Same as double top: short on confirmed neckline break with measured-move target equal to the height between peaks and neckline.
Common pitfalls
- Strong trends may produce a fourth test that breaks through
- Pattern requires distinct, well-separated peaks
Statistical context
Bulkowski reports lower reliability for triple tops than double tops in some markets — the additional test sometimes signals strength rather than weakness.
